SmCo is divided into SmCo5 and Sm2Co17 according to its composition, which are the first and second generation rare earth permanent magnetic materials respectively. Its development is limited by the scarcity and high price of its raw materials. As the second generation of rare earth permanent magnets, samarium cobalt (SmCo) not only has high magnetic energy product (14-28MGOe) and reliable coercivity, but also has good temperature characteristics in the series of rare earth permanent magnets. Compared with neodymium iron boron, samarium cobalt is more suitable for working in high temperature environment.
